Cellular senescence is a phenomenon that involves the permanent cessation of cell division. This process has been linked to potentially preventing cancer, aging, tissue repair, and development. With life expectancy increasing, numerous age-related diseases are becoming more prevalent. Scientific studies are focused on how to stop these age-related disorders, which has shown that cell senescence is a major contributing problem. Until treatments or medications are available to combat age-related disorders and diseases, you can use defy age services like those of the biostation to prevent and treat age-related diseases right now.
What is Cell Senescence?
As you age, your cells age too. Some of these cells stop dividing, but they do not die. Over time, these old cells start to build up in your body tissues and continue to impact your health. They also become resistant to death by upregulating critical cell survival pathways.
Long-term monitoring shows that some cells change their size and shape. Researchers have found that some of these cells can release harmful substances in your body that can lead to inflammation and damage to healthy cells around them.
This process of senescence is believed to possibly play a role in the development of various diseases and cancer, including cardiovascular diseases, dementia, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, and more. However, senescence also plays a positive role. It maintains tissue homeostasis, plays a role in normal development, and can limit the spread of cancer tumors. By experimenting with these cells, scientists are finding that removing these cells can improve your health span and increase your life span. The term senescence comes from the Latin word "senex," which is an old man.
What Triggers Senescence in Cells?
The trigger for senescence seems to be when cells reach a point where they can't handle more stress or damage. Cell stress and damage can be caused by external sources, such as radiation, toxins, and viruses. Examples include UV rays (due to sun exposure) or X-rays. Have you ever noticed the lead shield you get before an X-ray? That is to protect your cells and DNA.
Other cell damage happens inside the body through everyday cellular processes, including metabolism, which is how your body converts the foods you eat into energy. Research has shown that eliminating these cells can also reduce side effects of cancer drugs, such as cardiac dysfunction, bone marrow suppression, and fatigue. In some cases, it has shown promise of reducing cancer recurrence.
Current Research on Senescent Cells
There is ongoing research all over the country about how senescent cells work. Scientists at UC San Francisco recently found a mechanism that eliminates senescent cells. Immune cells called Natural Killer T (iNKT) cells function as a surveillance system when they are in a healthy state. They can eliminate any cells that the body senses as being foreign, which includes senescent cells. As you age, the iNKT cells become less active and can't fight against chronic diseases and obesity. What researchers have been doing is finding a way to stimulate the iNKT cells naturally.
These iNKT cells are key because they have a receptor which is not present in other cells. That means they can be activated without disturbing any other types of immune cells. Another benefit of iNKT cells is that they have a negative feedback loop. That means after a period of activity they return to a dormant state.
Senolytic Therapies and Senescent Cells
Senolytic drugs are what many scientists primarily focus on as they could provide relief for a variety of ailments that cause people to age. Other researchers and pharmaceutical companies are also working on ways to destroy these cells as a way to stop all the damage that happens as people age. New biotech companies are popping up that are working on identifying compounds that will target these cells and are starting to test the senolytic drugs on humans.
These efforts are being supported by both federal funding and private investors. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has approved multiple grants, including at least one in the seven figures, to move forward with the second phase of senolytics testing for cancer treatment. Private investors such as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel have invested significant amounts into this research as well.
