What Causes Urinary Incontinence?

There are different reasons why a person can suffer from urinary incontinence. Here are some of them:

  • Weak muscles – If you have weak pelvis muscles, you are likely to experience bladder problems. These muscles become weak and stretched following pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Nerve damage – When the nerves are damaged, they send signals to the bladder that aren’t exactly accurate. What happens is that a bladder spasm happens when it shouldn’t. Nerve damage often happens to people with diabetes, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis or stroke.
  • Medicines, alcohol and caffeine – What you drink and the medicine you take have a direct effect on the health of your bladder. Drinking lots of alcohol can cause nerves to fail while pills that contain diuretics can make the bladder feel swollen.
