5 Things You Should Know About DHEA, The Anti-Aging Supplement

Although you may have heard of DHEA and its benefits, do you really know what it is and all that it can do for you? DHEA has earned a reputation as one of the top anti-aging supplements. It is shown to play a role in improving libido, building muscle, and reducing health risks.

Dehydroepiandrosterone, or DHEA, is a precursor hormone produced by the adrenal glands that rest just above the kidneys on each side of the body. DHEA plays a vital role in the formation of the sex hormones, estrogen and testosterone, as well as stimulates the transformation that occurs during growth and development. DHEA begins to gradually decline in your late twenties, contributing to the process of aging. Levels continue to plummet throughout the lifespan—so much so that by the age of 70, you have less than 10 percent of what you had as vivacious twenty-something. Therapy with DHEA can be useful for treating chronic fatigue, dementia, osteoporosis, and autoimmune disorders, in addition to its anti-aging benefits:

1. Promotes muscle gain and fat loss.

DHEA is a precursor to the hormone testosterone and plays a role in growth and development, making it helpful for promoting muscle gain and fat loss. One study in men and women found that 50 milligrams per day for 6 months reduced abdominal and subcutaneous fat. In animal studies, DHEA was found to decrease total caloric intake, body weight, body fat, and total size and number of fat cells.

2. Cardiovascular disease defense.

Multiple studies have shown DHEA to play a significant role in cardiovascular health. One study found that men with low DHEA levels had a 48 percent increased risk of coronary heart disease. Another study found that 50 milligrams of DHEA daily reduced total cholesterol levels in women. DHEA is also shown to reduce vascular remodeling—a dangerous condition that leads to impaired blood flow and contributes to cardiovascular disease.

3. Combats metabolic disorders.

DHEA shifts metabolic balance in favor of energy utilization and minimizes fat storage by regulating gene expression. This function makes DHEA a crucial fighter in metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance, obesity, and diabetes.

4. Enhances libido.

In both human and animal studies, DHEA was linked to improved libido, including desire, arousal, and satisfaction. This has been shown to be effective in individuals suffering from challenges with libido, such as menopausal women and individuals on steroid medications that diminish sex drive.

5. Improves complexion.

More-recent studies have linked DHEA to a glowing complexion. One study out of Canada found that more than 50 genes were responsive when DHEA was applied topically, reducing the formation of rough skin, improving brightness, and epidermal thinning.

DHEA therapy should carefully monitored by your physician. Specialized testing can help determine if your hormones are out of balance. Hormone therapy doesn’t just treat testosterone and estrogen—aging is linked to an imbalance of all the hormones. Get tested and get back to enjoying a more youthful, vivacious life.
