Movember is a global movement started in 2011 by a charity called The Movember Foundation, which encourages men to grow a moustache for the month of November to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. An important way to monitor and maintain optimal health as men grow older is by undergoing hormone testing and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), as needed.
Testosterone is often known as the “man hormone,” though it occurs naturally in both men and women. As men grow older, a steady decline in testosterone occurs gradually, typically starting in the 30s. This can increase the risk of contracting life-threatening illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes.
The decrease of testosterone causes an imbalance in male hormones, which can have numerous negative effects in a man’s daily life such as low energy, night sweats, muscle loss, depression and some sexual dysfunctions such as low libido and erectile dysfunction. Fortunately, there are effective ways to treat diminishing testosterone levels, one of which is hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
The prostate is located below the urinary bladder and in the front of the rectum in males. Maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent prostate cancer. Men who are obese, with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher have the highest risk of developing prostate cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight and the energy to exercise daily can be harder as your age increases because of the decline of the testosterone, but testosterone therapy can restore testosterone to optimal levels. This provides more energy to the body and helps keep your weight stabilized.
Previously, it was thought that HRT may increase the risk of prostate cancer, however current medical research has invalidated this thinking by showing that HRT is not linked to prostate cancer.
Men with diabetes and obesity are more likely to develop depression. Some researchers believe that one of the symptoms of low testosterone is depression. The decrease of testosterone and the resulting decreased sex drive may contribute to irritability and depression. Some studies also note that testosterone has a direct effect on the serotonin level in the brain. Serotonin is a natural hormone that has many functions, one of which is to regulate our mood.
As mentioned above, one of the ways to prevent prostate cancer is by exercising daily or as much as possible, which can get more difficult with age. One of the effects of the decline in testosterone is low energy, which leads to physical inactivity. As known, lack of daily exercise can cause obesity, which also increases the risk of getting prostate cancer.
Achieve Optimal Health & Wellness at the biostation
Comprehensive diagnostic testing and monitoring, hormone replacement therapy and nutrient therapy can help men achieve and maintain good health and vitality throughout life. At the biostation, we specialize in advanced blood, food and allergy testing, and highly individualized, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and nutrient therapy.
As part of our hormone testing, we measure the Prostate specific antigen (PSA), a protein produced by the cells of the prostate gland which measures the level of PSA in a man’s blood. Measuring PSA can suggest the presence of, and help monitor for prostate cancer.
Remember to keep your own health in check. The best and easiest way to do this is by getting your hormone levels tested by our team of medical professionals at the biostation.
