When it comes to medical treatment for hot flashes, science hasn’t developed a one-size-fits-all solution. It was believed for many decades that there was only one type of “hot flash” and that all women would experience the same symptoms during menopause.

Recent research has shed much more light on the subject – validating treatment options that have been available at the biostation for several years. It turns out that there are actually many different types of hot flashes and symptoms each woman may experience.

Background and Lifestyle Classifications May Predict Hot Flash Symptoms

While virtually all women will encounter some onset symptoms related to menopause, it has not been possible to predict them accurately until now. A groundbreaking new study from the University of Pittsburgh classifies all women into four categories of likely to have hot flashes and symptoms of menopause.

These categories consist of but are not limited to:

#1 Few Hot Flash Symptoms

Chinese women have been shown to have a higher likelihood than any other race of women to have few or no reported symptoms related to hot flashes during their entire menopausal period.

#2 Long-Lasting Hot Flash Symptoms

Women with certain health conditions, such as anxiety and depression, are more likely to report that hot flashes continue throughout the entire period in which menopause begins. This is also suspected to be true for most African-American women.

#3 Early Onset Hot Flash Symptoms

Women with depression and anxiety, as well as those with higher BMI and those who begin menopause later in life, are more likely to experience hot flash symptoms early on in their transition period. These may also develop into long-lasting symptoms.

#4 Late Onset Hot Flash Symptoms

Women with a lower BMI are more likely to report later emergence of symptoms.

How are Hot Flashes Treated?

The Best Treatment for Hot Flashes: Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women is one of the most effective and recommended treatments during the entire range of menopause symptoms, including hot flashes.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is very similar to a woman's own production cycle regarding the distribution of sex-binding hormones and the release of hormones. Bioidentical hormones are used to supplement the body’s natural estrogen supply and maintain a healthy hormonal balance throughout life. BHRT can help female patients during the luteal stage and then after menopause. Most patients report relief from their worst symptoms after a single hormone replacement treatment.
