Knowing the Difference Between HRT for Men and Women

When it comes to aging, everyone wants to age well and for men and women the path to aging well can be very different. While both men and women have the same hormones, the amounts of each hormone for healthy balance vary between the two. These differences can make hormone replacement therapy (HRT) a very unique experience for each sex. Here’s everything you need to know about the difference between HRT for men and women:

HRT for Women

Among women, hormone fluctuations can vary vastly. Unlike men, women face many “conditions” throughout their lives that impact their hormones and can rapidly alter balance. A woman’s first menses, childbirth, and menopause are the inevitable variables women face when it comes to hormone balance. Other factors that remain in women’s control include diet, exercise, stress management, weight management, and lifestyle choices such as alcohol and tobacco use. Imbalanced hormones, whatever the cause, not only affect quality of life, but can raise the risk of disease.

In general, women have more estrogen than men and just a little bit of testosterone. As a woman experiences different milestones in her life, such as childbirth and menopause, hormone levels can shift, sometimes very sharply (as in the case of menopause) and emphasize the need for hormone replacement therapy. And, her needs may vary. Some women benefit from progesterone therapy because they suffer from estrogen dominance, while other women may find their estrogen levels too low or non-existent. There are some women who may benefit from testosterone therapy. Although women have very little testosterone compared to men, it still plays an important role in maintaining lean body mass and controlling mood swings. Therapy needs vary among women, just as they vary between the sexes.

HRT for Men

For men, hormonal fluctuations hit later in life, in most cases. Men will experience a surge in hormones at puberty and then begin experiencing a steady decline of testosterone starting at about age 25. Without proper treatment, this decline reaches a peak around midlife—after 45—and can lead to the classic symptoms of “male menopause” that have become known as “andropause.” In addition to declining levels of testosterone, men may experience declines in growth hormone and DHEA. They might also deal with fluctuations of SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin), which can further deplete available testosterone. Men can even deal with too much or too little estrogen and progesterone.

As with women, these declines can be made worse by poor nutrition and exercise habits, stress, and tobacco and alcohol use. And, just like hormonal imbalance leads to a number of uncomfortable symptoms and struggles for women, it can happen to men, too: increased risk of disease, weight gain, low libido, depression, and mood swings, just to name a few.

There is no “one size fits all” therapy for men. Not every man will need more testosterone. Getting accurate, advanced lab testing and having your results and symptoms assessed by a physician can determine the right hormone replacement therapy plan for each individual man.
